Abstract
Bridging workforce skills gaps has become a critical priority for enhancing economic growth, productivity, and global competitiveness, particularly in developing economies such as Nigeria. Despite the expansion of vocational education programmes, concerns persist regarding the employability of graduates, with employers frequently reporting deficiencies in the practical, technical, and soft skills required in the labour market. This mismatch between educational outcomes and industry needs contributes significantly to graduate unemployment and underemployment, limiting the nation's capacity for sustainable economic development. This study examined how strategic partnerships between industries and vocational education institutions can serve as an effective mechanism for bridging workforce skills gaps and improving employment outcomes for vocational education graduates in Nigeria. Guided by two research questions, the study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised 212 vocational education lecturers from seven government-owned universities in Southern Nigeria, from which 106 respondents were selected using a random sampling technique. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire that underwent face and content validation by three experts in vocational education. The instrument demonstrated acceptable reliability, with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.73. Data were analysed using frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that industry–institution partnerships can significantly enhance graduate employability through initiatives such as resource sharing, staff exchange programmes, workplace-based learning opportunities, curriculum collaboration, internship placements, and the establishment of vocational skills exhibition and innovation centres. These collaborative efforts help align training with labour market demands, thereby reducing skills mismatches and unemployment among vocational education graduates. The study concludes that strengthening partnerships among industries, educational institutions, and government agencies is essential for developing a skilled, adaptable, and competitive workforce. It recommends the institutionalisation of industry-driven training frameworks and collaborative skill development programmes to foster economic growth, innovation, and national competitiveness in Nigeria.
